2022.  Projects in review

Written by Wendy Mitrovich | 2022/12/12 5:14 PM

Some projects are bigger than others, some have tighter budget constraints, some are very technical but each project is a passion for our team at Polyflor.

We asked our team which projects were their highlights for 2022 and have delayed this article to give them time to make their submissions;  selecting just one was not an easy feat.

Polyflor Eastern Cape

Juan van Niekerk

With this project having started in August 2014, it has been a long journey that the team has been on but it was well worth the wait. The project came to a close in November 2022 and the Area Military Health Unit gained a beautiful military hospital facility in Forest Hill (Eastern Cape).

Prema Charnock (Industry Sector Sales Manager | Healthcare)

Our national Industry Sector Sales Manager, Prema Charnock, found the Netcare Alberton project to be a highlight for her in 2022.

Faced with the challenge of securing the final project specification, involving discussions and negotiations with multiple partners, Prema did not shy away. The benefits at the end of her 3.5 year project (March 2019 - November 2022) was the excitement of being involved in such a large project from start to finish and the wide range of new and different products that were used.

Key members on the project:

Flooring contractor:

Turner Peirson, Mario Selibas

Main contractor:

Trencon Construction, Shalan Govender

Architect:

A3 Architects, Hilary Smith

Precious Makwe, a previous member of the Polyflor team says this was truly a project out of the ordinary.

Polyflor Western Cape

Priscilla Bouman

Priscilla's highlight of the year was the SACS Junior School – Innovation Centre. We agree with Priscilla that all the colours and happy design made for a great project. Every job comes with its challenges but, with positive energy, the team was able to find solutions.  They even had to fit castor wheels on some of the furniture to be able to move it around during and after installation of the flooring.

Key members on the project:

Flooring contractor:

Teck Flooring, Lance Graetz

Polyflor Kwa-Zulu Natal

Fran Fenner

The  Hibiscus Private Hospital, Scottburgh was a special one for Fran who worked on this project from 2019 to 2022. Fran shared her thoughts with us when asked about the Hibiscus Private Hospital:

"The building was standing for several years, and we didn’t know what state it would be in when we arrived back, but fortunately GVK had done a really great job, so we only had moisture issues and a very fast time line.  GVK protected the floors extremely well from damages through the construction process as we had multiple trades overlapping. The early-stage design dealt with a very tricky expansion joint, through the passage and along one wall. All transitions etc. were well documented by the professional team."

Key members on the project:

Architect:

TJ Architects

Main contractor:

GVK-Siya Zama Construction

Read what Lea Demmer, previously of GVK-Siya Zama Construction had to say about the project here. Lea has since moved to New Zealand but it was great working on this project with him.

Flooring contractor:

Dereck Logan Flooring

Fran also shared with us why this project was special to her:

"Wow, what was special …. I think seeing the eventual completion, after having already been to site years before to assess the starting phase of the screeds and then having the closure of site.  Followed by Covid-19, we were all poised for this contract and then the wait (the same group built another whole hospital while this shell stood waiting). I think it’s the feeling of relief combined with joy, when we saw the final finished project!"

Nelia Garcia (Industry Sector Sales Manager | Education, Retail, Hospitality, Commercial & IT)

Historically vinyl flooring sparked some debate on its sustainability in the building industry, but Nelia is determined to educate people on the accurate facts and why she is so proud to have taken on the role of the Green Advisor for the business. With her passion for sustainability, the new library at The Holy Rosary School is a memorable project for Nelia because of its biophillic design.

Having been born at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Sipho was thrilled at being involved in renovating their Trauma Unit Ward 1. The project was sponsored by a foundation that aims to bring Baragwanath Hospital back to its 'former glory'.

Sipho commented:

"The hospital is one of the best in the country and I believe it has so much potential."
