Essential skills a good vinyl flooring contractor must have

We surveyed a group of 17 vinyl flooring industry experts to determine what skillset they believe a reputable flooring contractor must have. This is what they said.

 

The hard skills

  1. Experience, great references, well trained, constantly updating their skill set and who fully understand the products and scope of the project. Read the 8 Questions you need to ask to help you determine the level of skill and experience from a flooring contractor.
  2. An ability to understand technical detail and drawings and to problem solve.
  3. Good up to date product knowledge.
  4. An understanding of screed assessment including analysis of, and solutions to, the following questions:
    • Is the screed sufficiently dry?
    • Is the screed sufficiently strong or hard enough?
    • Is the screed smooth & level?
  5. Registration with FITA.
  6. Constant and experienced on-site supervision of the installation team.
  7. For vinyl flooring, excellent welding and coving skills
  8. For LVTs, excellent knowledge about adhesive use and pattern lay-out.
  9. Use of the correct tools.
  10. Robust post-installation service.
  11. A good understanding of PU vs PUR maintenance regime.

The soft skills

  1. Top of the list every time is an ability to effectively, genuinely and professionally communicate with the
    • Architect
    • Quantity Surveyor
    • Specifier
    • Manufacturer
    • Builder
    • Other team members
    • Other tradesmen/women on site
  2. Able to understand and meet the clients’ expectations, keep them informed and deliver on promises.
  3. Able to ask for help and guidance when required and to then listen and implement technical advice from the manufacturers of the product.
  4. Take pride in their work.
  5. Be honest and professional at all times.
