How to mitigate flooring installation risks

Written by Polyflor Technical Team | 2021/03/09 2:55 PM

Each flooring product has its own installation method and if not adhered to, will increase your installation risk. Vinyl flooring, for example, has extremely specific demands and you need to get it right.

The first step in mitigating these risks is to partner with a specialist, especially when tight deadlines and budgets are the norm. Nothing beats a like-minded, responsible team with a common purpose and goal, with each specialist bringing their own expert skills and experience to the project.  We recommend six stages that are worth incorporating in any flooring project to mitigate risk:

STAGE 1

KICK-START MEETING:

  • Ensure all stakeholders involved in the flooring preparation and installation process have a meeting on site prior to the start of the project to do a risk assessment and agree on a project plan.
  • It is important to consult with the screed and moisture barrier system supplier on their method statement and best practice guidelines.

STAGE 2

POST INSTALLATION OF SCREED AND PRIOR TO VINYL INSTALLATION:

  • All stakeholders need to be present to do a site inspection and a site report is to be collated by us and sent to all parties.

STAGE 3

MOCK-UP INSTALLATION:

  • This step is critical and the area selected, which is determined by the architect, is used as a benchmark to ensure the accepted standard of work is adhered to throughout the installation.
  • No welding or grooving should be done until we have assessed and signed off the quality of workmanship of the joins.
  • Most important: The appointed flooring contractor must verify that their installation teams have completed the necessary vinyl training.
  • We will provide additional training to remedy any issues should they arise at this stage.

STAGE 4

AD HOC INSPECTIONS DURING INSTALLATION:

  • We will do inspections throughout the installation to ensure the quality of the workmanship and to mitigate any risks. Any challenges along the way should be put in writing by all parties and shared amongst the team.

STAGE 5

POST VINYL INSTALLATION AND PRIOR TO CLEANING:

  • All stake holders must meet on site to do a final assessment and we will issue a final site report to document the results.

STAGE 6

HANDOVER:

  • All stakeholders to meet on site for the handover. We will provide a handover pack consisting of our product warranty and recommended maintenance regime.
