Browsing through trend predictions for 2021, I found myself reflecting on the year that was and how it has prepared us for the uncertainty of what lies ahead. Home became our safe place, connections became more important than ever and trust had to be earned.
Who could have predicted that most of us would be faced with one of the greatest humanitarian challenges of our lifetime, and that a year later, we would still find ourselves in the midst of a global health crisis with far reaching consequences on the world as we know it?
There is a strange sense of comfort knowing that we're all in this together and reminds me how incredibly tenacious and resilient the human race can be. Strategic thinking, innovation and transformation have become the order of the day, and have fast tracked change in such a positive way. We were forced to re-think, re-structure, re-fine and re-imagine and in doing so, have learnt that things can be done differently. Pantone announced two colours of the year for 2021: PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating. There are a few interpretations of this choice but in short, the combination ultimately provides a solid and dependable foundation in an era that is fraught with "grey area", with a burst of bright, energetic optimism.
Comfort and hygiene seem to be underpinning most design trends, together with the massive shift in space planning to accommodate social distancing. Finishes, fittings, furniture and decor now have place and purpose and rank personal and important. With the realisation that our reality can change at the drop of a hat, responsible choice is no longer optional.
"Feels right" as opposed to blindly following a trend still stands. The difference is that the trends we're seeing for 2021 have been borne from a deep sense of survival and conscience. Make wise choices, specify based on knowing all the facts and find a responsible supplier who knows what is right and will not compromise on what is important.
