In light of these uncertain times we find ourselves in, with social media abuzz with posts on the earth healing itself, we find ourselves more conscious, now more than ever, of the importance of sustainability. As we take stock, let us join in making new choices and creating new ways to love and heal the earth fully. Vinyl is a sustainable choice.
With an increased demand for sustainability, architects, specifiers and contractors from around the world are adapting their methods to adopt this new thinking.
RAW MATERIALS SOURCED RESPONSIBLY
Sustainable manufacturing starts with the responsible selection of raw materials and Polyflor vinyl flooring products contain up to 85% natural materials that are 100% recyclable. Calcium carbonate, freely available from the earth’s crust makes up the balance. Polyflor does not use any plasticisers that are registered as repro-toxic, endocrine disrupting or carcinogenic. Lead, cadmium or any other “harmful” substances will never be found in any of the products.
“Polyflor SA has been collecting and recycling installation offcuts for several years now and has ‘rescued’ over 8-tons of material from landfill.”
VINYL DOT CERTIFICATION
Polyflor is proud to be rated with higher sustainability standards than most, with a host of green certifications from the UK and other worldwide certification bodies. Polyflor South Africa will only import the highest quality products and has earned the local Vinyl Dot certification, by the Southern African Vinyl Association (SAVA), certifying complete adherence to the SAVA Product Stewardship Commitment. This attests to the fact that these products are responsible, safe and of the best quality.
To achieve the Vinyl Dot certification, companies must commit to sustainable manufacturing processes, with a focus on mercury-free vinyl production and on reducing Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) emissions and content in their products.
Polyflor SA is dedicated to optimising recycling and building sustainability awareness across the value chain. Polyflor SA has been collecting and recycling installation offcuts for several years now and has “rescued” over 8 tons of material from landfill. New testing methods are being explored to recycle rip up material and should be trialed shortly.
RESOURCE EFFICIENT AND RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION
Vinyl, as a floor covering solution, is notably energy-efficient to produce and the production process uses 15% less energy than linoleum and 50% less energy than ceramics. Further to this, an estimated 84% of the fuel mix which Polyflor UK uses for electricity comes directly from renewable energy. What is important to note is where the vinyl flooring product is manufactured and by whom. There are a great deal of products still made with no compliance to worldwide responsible and best practice guidelines. Make sure to inquire and ask for the sustainability credentials before selecting your product.
