At Polyflor, we believe in creating beautiful, functional spaces that make a difference in people’s lives. Our recent collaboration with The Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust (MAD Trust) brought this mission to life as we had the pleasure of supporting the third project at the Sebokeng Regional Hospital in Gauteng, for a Children’s Emergency Facility. This project allowed us to contribute our expertise to a cause close to our hearts, supporting the organisation’s work to make a positive impact in our community.
Understanding the Mission
Since 2008, The Carte Blanche Making A Difference Trust has been committed to transforming healthcare spaces for children in South Africa. Their work focuses on enhancing Paediatric Operating Theatres, ICUs, and High-Care Wards by drawing on the expertise of top specialists. With countless hours of professional dedication, their projects continue to bring lasting benefits to children in state hospitals across the country. We are proud to collaborate with the team on their impactful journey to create safer, more effective healing spaces for young patients.
Creating Spaces that Heal: Prioritising Safety, Comfort, and Cleanliness
In healthcare environments, every design choice plays a role in patient well-being. On this project, our focus was on creating spaces that not only look welcoming but also promote healing, safety, and hygiene. Our vinyl flooring and wall protection solutions were selected with these priorities in mind, with each product being chosen for its durability, easy maintenance, and hygienic properties, ensuring that children, staff, and families experience a clean, safe, and comfortable environment.
Choosing the Perfect Products: Selections for Lasting Impact
For this project at the Sebokeng Regional Hospital, we selected vinyl flooring and wall protection that combines durability with a welcoming, child-friendly design. Each product was chosen to meet the hospital's needs, providing both resilience for high-traffic areas and ease of maintenance.
Here are the specific options we used to support a safe, clean environment for patients and staff.
One of the standout choices for this project was a heavy-duty homogeneous vinyl flooring featuring a tonal chip design, offering both durability and a modern look. With an extensive palette of contemporary colors, it allowed us to create an inviting yet professional feel. This flooring requires low-cost, polish-free maintenance, making it ideal for busy spaces, and its welded, seamless finish enhances hygiene and safety.
This range was supplied in a range of colours throughout the general ward and treatment areas.
Another key product we selected was a specialised
safety flooring
designed to ensure slip resistance. This flooring enhances traction and safety, particularly in wet conditions, with low slip potential and a score of 36+ on the Pendulum Wet Test. It is ideally suited to continually wet areas and was used in the showers and assisted bathrooms. This choice brings both reliability and peace of mind to spaces where safety is paramount.
For areas with high traffic and a risk of spillage, we chose a sustainable slip-resistant safety vinyl flooring that offers both durability and performance. The virtually invisible slip-resistant particles enhance safety without compromising on aesthetics, while the flooring’s Pendulum test score of 36+ (slider 96) ensures reliable traction. With Polysafe PUR, the surface provides superior cleaning benefits, making it ideal for environments that demand both safety and ease of maintenance. This product is perfect for busy spaces where both functionality and hygiene are top priorities and was used in the bathroom, utility and specimen collection areas.
The colour palette was put together with care by HDG Architects.
A range of Gradus Wall Protection products were installed throughout the area, enhancing the aesthetics while ensuring that areas exposed to high levels of pedestrian and wheeled traffic were protected, ensuring minimal maintenance.
SureProtect Endure is a versatile protective wall cladding that offers durability and protection. The embossed texture conceals the effects of impact and abrasion and helps to reduce the need to repair and re-paint wall surfaces, offering minimal maintenance,
In certain areas, this product was was cut by waterjet into the most beautiful designs, transforming the space.
The WGS125 wall guard consists of an aluminium or PVC-u retainer, internal PVC-u bumper, PVC-u cover, and PVC-u end caps. Designed for a tight fit against the wall, it minimises dirt and dust accumulation. The covers and accessories are replaceable if damaged and are through-coloured and textured to hide the effects of impact and abrasion. The internal bumper adds strength, absorbing and dissipating impact. The end caps feature black reveals for a neat joint and contain an anti-microbial agent to prevent bacterial growth.
The D200P is a modular handrail and wall guard system made of PVC-u, designed to meet guidelines for handrail dimensions, including grip diameter, distance from the wall, and bracket clearance. The handrail has a 40mm smooth diameter for comfort, while the textured wall guard conceals impact and abrasion marks. Both elements feature aluminium retainers, PVC-u covers, and accessories in 32 colour options with an anti-bacterial finish. To ensure visual contrast, handrails should have a Light Reflectance Value (LRV) 30 points different from the surrounding surface. For optimal contrast, the Dual Rail system should have two colours, with the handrail contrasting the wall and the wall guard blending with it.
The Gradus CGH7590 High Impact PVC-u corner guard features a 75mm wing and a 90° angle. Available in 6 standard height options, it comes in kit form, including a pre-cut aluminium or PVC-u retainer, PVC-u cover, and finishing caps. It can be cut on-site to meet specific needs, with additional finishing caps available for order. The aluminium retainer offers rigid support for weak substrates exposed to high impact from wheeled traffic, while the PVC-u retainer is flexible, ideal for gently undulating surfaces. Made from up to 100% recycled material, the textured, through-coloured PVC-u cover conceals impact and abrasion marks and is easily replaceable if damaged.
The Gradus CGS2590 Standard PVC-u corner guard features a 25mm wing and a 90° angle, made from through-coloured, easy-to-clean PVC-u that is textured to hide the effects of impact and abrasion. It is available in two versions: with factory-applied adhesive tape for easy installation (CGS2590T) or without tape for installation with a suitable adhesive (CGS2590N). The corner guard comes in 7 standard heights and 34 colours, allowing it to either contrast or blend with surrounding wall surfaces. The CGS2590 can also be cut on-site to meet specific height requirements.
The Gradus CGFLX60 Adjustable Angle PVC-u corner guard features a 60mm wing and a flexible PVC apex, allowing it to adapt to any external angle. It also has flexible PVC wing tips for a close fit to the wall. This one-piece, surface-mount corner guard is made from through-coloured, easy-to-clean PVC-u, textured to hide the effects of impact and abrasion. The CGFLX60 is available with factory-applied adhesive tape for easy installation (CGFLX60T) or without tape for adhesive installation (CGFLX60N). It comes in 6 standard height options (cuttable on-site) and 4 colours, offering flexibility in design to contrast or blend with wall surfaces.
Our Approach: Quality and Collaboration
Throughout the project, we worked closely with the Carte Blanche MAD Trust and HDG Architects to align with their vision for the space. We wanted to make sure that our contribution not only enhanced the aesthetics of the facility but also brought practical benefits that will serve the community for years to come.
Overcoming Challenges: Navigating Project Hurdles and the 'Construction Mafia'
While working on this project, we encountered some unique challenges, one of which was the presence of local "construction mafia" groups that sometimes disrupt the progress of projects. These groups added additional pressures on timelines, requiring us to remain flexible and proactive in managing the project’s flow. Despite these obstacles, we were able to successfully navigate the situation and ensure that the installation went smoothly. Making a Difference, One Project at a Time
The completion of this project is a reminder of the role we can play in supporting meaningful causes. We’re thrilled to have been a part of this transformation and look forward to seeing how this new space will benefit the community.
